Famous Cities of the World: Reykjavik

Reykjavik held the prestigious title European City of Culture in the year 2000; a welcome recognition of the energetic and colourful cultural life of the capital. Reykjavik's landmark, the Perlan, is a unique piece of architecture - built in 1988. On top of the large tanks in which natural hot water is stored for heating the city, a glass dome has been constructed: under the dome is a rotating restaurant serving fine cuisine! Reykjavik is a surprisingly arty city and is filled with art galleries of various shapes and sizes. Of all the commercial art galleries in Reykjavik, the biggest and most notable is the Art Gallery Fold, where many inexpensive pieces can be purchased as memorable souvenirs.

Iceland is many times referred to as the "nightlife" capital of the north. Many clubs don't close until 6am on the weekend and 1am on weekdays. Reykjavik is full of life , culture and is colourful at any time of year. Summer, when everything comes alive and the sun hardly goes down, is a time of action in the capital and people enjoy staying out late.

Reykjavik is known for its legendary nightlife is bolstered by plentiful cultural and social happenings in addition to an abundance of first-class restaurants. The size of Reykjavik city centre is also limited enough to allow for easy navigation by foot. Reykjavik is definitely the gem of the country; its famous capital definitely is special. The city is set on a back drop of outstanding mountains. Reykjavik (commonly known as "Bjonaborg") is the capital of Iceland. Its freezing cold and it's special but what the hell would I know?

Reykjavik is a vibrant, safe and welcoming city, as well as Iceland's largest. A car rental is highly recommended for travel around the city and for day trips as well.
